Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea

Travel back to the night of one of the most shocking maritime disasters of the modern era in Costa Concordia, a documentary tracing the catastrophic 2012 shipwreck of the luxury cruise liner and the human tragedy that unfolded off the Italian island of Giglio.

Combining never-before-seen footage, archive material and powerful first-hand testimony, the documentary reconstructs the events leading up to the collision and the chaotic evacuation that followed. Survivors, rescuers and those closest to the disaster offer intimate accounts of a night marked by confusion, courage and extraordinary acts of survival.

Gelato was proud to contribute to the series. Working with material captured by passengers, emergency services, news crews and eyewitnesses, our team carefully prepared imagery of varying formats and quality for use throughout the documentary.

Every frame presented its own challenges. Low-light mobile phone recordings and images captured amid the confusion of the evacuation required a precise and sensitive approach.

The resulting imagery places viewers at the centre of the unfolding disaster: from the moment the ship struck the rocks and began to list, to the desperate evacuation of thousands of passengers and the remarkable rescue operation mounted along the shoreline. These visual accounts serve as anchors throughout the film, connecting the wider investigation to the personal experiences of those who were there.

Drawing on new testimony and previously unseen material, Costa Concordia examines not only how the disaster happened, but how decisions made before and after the collision shaped its devastating consequences. The documentary offers a gripping and deeply human portrait of survival, responsibility and the lasting impact of a tragedy that shocked the world.
