Travel back to the conflict that defined the 20th century in WWII With Tom Hanks, a landmark 20-part documentary event from Nutopia, A+E Networks and the History Channel. Gelato was proud to contribute over 700 painstakingly restored and colourised archival stills, bringing new life and clarity to imagery not seen in this form for over eighty years.

Working with source material from global archives, for over 12 months our team meticulously restored decades old photographs - many extremely damaged, faded or fragile - to reveal them in stunning detail. We then applied our custom built colourisation pipeline to breathe new vibrancy and realism into the black & white imagery of wartime Europe, the Pacific, and the American home front.

Every still was treated with forensic precision, informed by period accurate reference materials and guided by expert historical consultants. Our team of artists painted intricate colour into infantry boots and insignia, aircraft fuselages and civilian dress, no detail was too small. These images serve as visual anchors throughout the series, connecting Tom Hanks’ narration to the raw human reality of the war that shaped the modern world.

Hosted and narrated by Tom Hanks, and drawing on fresh historical scholarship, WWII With Tom Hanks offers an unflinching and deeply human portrait of a global conflict still echoing through the present day.
